Before that, all part of my studies, I did 3 internships in Jasper to get better with my working English. Like many here in Jasper, I was planning on coming for one summer only but got hooked on the beauty of the Rockies.

More than ever I am enjoying this park. A year ago I didn’t even know the name or even know that you could hike the mountains that surround the town. They are by the way part of that renowned best scenic trail in Jasper National Park: the Skyline Trail. This is all due to meeting Ben, this crazy stranger from overseas who is keeping me in shape, active and who would know that I would survive camping, backpacking and canoeing! Ask my friends and family…I hate bugs and sweating!

I did sea kayak in Québec before (couple times) and really enjoyed that and I raft once on a class 3 river here in the Rockies last year but that is all for water experience. I was as well enjoying day hiking in the trails around the town and that would be it for activities. This summer, I am gaining the experience and the training needed to be able to take on the upcoming journey, and so, every weekend that I have, I am camping, backpacking, canoeing or all the above, and all for the first time in my life (backyard camping apparently doesn’t count…). I am really enjoying canoeing (more than backpacking) which is great since this expedition is with a canoe and not hiking from source-to-sea! My goal: to make camping accessible for all and trendy, after all, if I can do so can anyone! I am the type of girl who makes a great deal of looking good…even in the middle of the wilderness and the only other living thing that can see you is that elk who decided to hide in the middle of the river – but I am not the type to hike with high heels!

Why am I going on a 4-month expedition with minimal experience? I like challenges and I do think that I can do it, mostly after all the training that I have already been through this summer. Every day, I love learning new skills and find myself pushed further emotionally and physically and I learn a great deal about myself. I am also quite involved in this adventure already, doing marketing things and making food for this expedition, and I will finish what I started!

_________________________________________________________________

– Vicki

I am originally from the East of Québec (Matane in Gaspésie) and have lived in Jasper for more than 3 years now, since I graduated from Tourism at the Cégep de Matane in 2008.
